As we mark off the days on our calendars, wondering when everything will go back to normal. We are confined to our homes, our movements are limited and we are trying to figure out what the heck we're going to watch next.
So here is my first list for you. This is the five shows to watch on Netflix.
1. Altered Carbon

I have to be honest, when I first saw the trailer for this show, I was intrigued. It was futuristic, there was a murder to solve and it looked pretty fast paced. But I didn’t watch it then. Not till this March did I decide to dive into the world of Stacks and Sleeves.
The concept of Altered Carbon really blew my mind. Imagine that you have the ability to live for hundreds and hundreds of years, wearing a different face every so often. I ended up binging both season in two days. And now I need season 3!
This Netflix Original is based on the 2002 cyberpunk novel by Richard K. Morgan and is followed by two sequels, Broken Angels (2003) and Woken Furies (2005).
Altered Carbon is for those who enjoy a good murder-mystery and sci-fi content.

2. The Witcher

What ticks me off the most is people calling this the next Game of Thrones. It's not. The Witcher a show in it's own league. Initially based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski then later adapted into one of the most popular game series, is loved by many and it has a strong following.
I only knew of the games and had been meaning to play it but never got the chance too. When Henry Cavill got cast as Geralt of Rivia, the White Wolf, I was intrigued. Because who didn’t love Cavill as the Man of Steel? His portrayal of Geralt is quite entertaining and you can gauge a lot of emotion from his grunts and monosyllabic answers.
After the first episode, you will find yourself extremely confused and wondering what the heck just happened. As the episodes progress, things start to make more sense. But you have to pay attention. If you're distracted and not giving this show 100% focus, you really wouldn’t know how everything fits.
I have started reading the first book so that I can get a grip of the world of the Witcher.
This new favourite has given birth to whole new set of memes that had us in stitches and a new song that we can never get out of our heads as soon as you hear the word Toss.

3. The Ranch

This had been on My List probably ever since I activated my Netflix account. I had been putting it off. I didn’t know what to expect or what the show was even about but I liked Ashton Kutcher and his work so The Ranch was bound to be good content.
When Covid-19 was really starting to settle in and social distancing and self-isolation was the main gospel everyone was adhering too, I decided to finally watch the trailer. It was a comedy! And a good laugh was what I definitely needed during this really strange time.
The Ranch did not disappoint. Ashton Kutcher plays Colt Bennett, a washed up football QB in his 30s who comes back home to help his father, Beau (Sam Elliott), run their family ranch, Iron River Ranch. This nugget of gold is a great balance of comedy and drama. When the hilarity ensues, you'll be reaching for the tissues or holding your stomach. But when the seriousness of real life situations are brought into focus, you'll still be reaching for the tissues but because the gravity of how relatable the struggle of everyday life is.
Kutcher and Elliott play so well off of each other and I found myself with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard and I ended up becoming emotionally invested in the Bennett family.
This show also features a lot of great country music and gives you some insight into how hard it is to run a ranch.

4. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

I remember when I first heard about this show. It was 2015, I was grocery shopping with my friend, Aaron, and he was enthusiastically telling me about this new cop show he started watching. He tells me of the two police detectives, Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago, and their running bet on who can get the most arrests. He said it was really funny and that I should check it out.
He didn’t make it sound all that appealing if I’m being candid. He didn’t tell me anything else apart from the bet. Then I turned to Google. When I saw that Jake Peralta was played by ANDY SAMBERG I wanted to throw something at Aaron.
That was a big piece of information to leave out! It’s Andy freaking Samberg! SNL Alum and member of The Lonely Island. He’s awesome and hilarious, and I’m not gonna lie, I kinda think he’s hot (don’t judge me). I wanted nothing more than to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine from that day onward.
We had a close call in 2018 when Fox cancelled this beloved cop comedy but NBC swooped in and saved the day by renewing it not for one but three seasons. Thank you, NBC. You're the true MVP.
When I asked Aaron about why he didn’t mention Andy, his reply was, “One actor does not a good tv show make.”
Well I beg to differ, sir. B99 has some of the more amazing characters that I have ever seen on tv and everyone is so quirky that it’s just a pure joy to watch.

5. Lucifer

Oh the Devil can be ever so charming. And no one does it better than Tom Ellis.
I watched the Pilot when it first came out but didn't think much of it. Maybe because at the same time I was pulling an all-nighter to try and finish a Uni assignment that was due the next day.
Then I binged. I was hooked. I needed more. I needed to satisfy my little fangirl heart. Then Fox did another dirty around the same time as the B99 cut. Fox cancelled Lucifer. The world was in an uproar because it was left on the biggest cliffhanger ever!
We campaigned. Oh man id we make so much noise that it made the news. The #SaveLucifer campaigned had made it's way up the social media ladder as one of the most talked about topics online.
A video I had posted about my frustration was reposted by two of the cast members, the wonderful D.B.Woodside who portrays Lucifer's brother, Amenadiel, and the extraordinary Rachael E. Harris who plays Dr. Linda Martin, therapist to the Devil himself.
Like NBC saved B99, Netflix heard our pleas and adopted Lucifer into their family.
I love Lucifer (not a statement I can say out loud amongst strangers) because it's fast paced, I am a major fan of cop shows, the writers are wizards and are phenomenal at what they do, and the performances are top notch.
Rotten Tomatoes: 87%
IMdB: 8.2 / 10
